Frequently Asked Questions About Parent Coaches
What’s the difference between coaching and therapy?
Parent coaching focuses on the present and helps you plan for the future. It’s a collaborative, action-oriented process that builds on your strengths. It is ideal for parents facing challenges, but not crises. Therapy, on the other hand, often looks into the past to address trauma and treat mental health conditions. Therapy is typically longer-term, while working with a parent coach usually spans a few months. Some of my clients work with both a therapist and a parent coach. If you’re unsure whether coaching is the right fit, contact me for a complimentary consultation to discuss your situation.
There’s so much parenting advice on social media. Isn’t that kind of like coaching?
Social media is filled with helpful and inspiring parenting advice, and I agree, it can be informative! However, it doesn’t replace 1:1 work with a parent coach. Social media offers static, pre-packaged advice that isn’t tailored to your unique situation. Coaching, by contrast, is a dynamic process that adapts to your needs. My coaching meets you where you are, gently nudges you to your next destination, and shifts as you grow.
Plus, parenting advice on social media can be so overwhelming and even discouraging. It’s easy to feel bad about not living up to what you see online. As a parent coach, I help you cut through the noise, find and trust your voice, and discover what works best for your family.
Do you encourage parents to adopt a specific method?
Not at all. The beauty of parent coaching is that it's tailored to your unique family. What works for one family might not work for another. As a parent coach, I won’t impose a specific method or tell you what to do. Instead, we’ll work together to discover approaches that make sense for your family and align with your values and goals. You are the expert on your family; my role is to support your growth.
While every family’s journey is different, I do believe parents share a few common desires. Parents want to feel connected to their kids, confident in their parenting, and calm within themselves. They also want to let go of the guilt that gets in their way. Together, we’ll co-create actionable steps to help you do just that!
Does my child join the sessions?
No, these sessions are designed specifically for parents and caregivers. Because parents are the leaders of their families, the focus of parent coaching is on providing you with the tools, strategies, and confidence to guide your family effectively and achieve your goals.
Are our conversations confidential?
Yes, all coaching discussions are completely confidential. However, as required by law, I must report any suspected or known cases of child abuse or neglect to ChildLine and the appropriate county children and youth agency.
